SIBSHOPS is a nationally acclaimed program that provides peer support within a recreational environment for children who have a sibling with special needs.
A SIB = This is the family member, brother/sister, who will have the longest-lasting relationship with a person who has a disability.
For our directors and our facilitators who run them, SIBSHOPS are evidence of their loving concern for SIBS, the sibling with a brother/sister with special health and developmental needs. For the kids who attend them, SIBSHOPS are lively, pedal-to-the-metal events where they will:
• Talk about the good and not-so-good parts of having a sib with special needs with others who “get it”
• Meet other sibs (sometimes for the first time)
• Have fun learning to surf, bodyboard, water safety and fun toys
• Play some great beach based games
• Learn how other brother and sisters handle sticky situations and challenges that sometimes faced by these brothers and sisters
• Laugh and have some more fun!
The SIBSHOP curriculum is used throughout the United States and Canada and in Japan, New Zealand, Argentina, Iceland, Ireland, England, Italy, and Turkey.
*Note: Our facilitators on the beach are sibs themselves and professionally trained!
We are a locally run non-profit organization, so any support is always appreciated and will go back into the program to help as many SIBS as possible.
